Skinny Hurricane Recipe: Taking the 'Fat' Out of Fat Tuesday

If there is one way to celebrate, Mardi Gras, it is with a cocktail! And what better cocktail than a Hurricane?

The traditional Hurricane cocktail started in New Orleans as a way for the bar owner to get rid of a few cases of rum before he could get a hold of the more popular liquors, such as whiskey and scotch. He threw the rum in a tall glass with some fruit juice and served to the sailors. The drink caught on and become a hit!

For today's cocktail, I lightened it up by only using light rum (rather than a mix of dark and light), then mixed it with light orange and cranberry juice and skipping the heavy juice, simple syrup and grenadine. This drink is fruity and goes down easy! For more light cocktail recipes, check out my blog The Housewife in Training Files.

  • 1 1/2 ounces Bacardi Select Rum
  • 2 ounces Light Orange Juice
  • 2 ounces Light Cranberry Juice
  • Garnish, Orange Peel Twist

Fill a cocktail glass (if you have a hurricane glass, even better!) with ice. Pour in rum first.

Add juices on top, and mix with a cocktail spoon. Garnish with orange peel twist.
