Smashing Grape Cocktail Recipe

When summer bliss fades and the chaos and responsibilities of fall take over, we can all use a pick-me-up to take the edge off of the back to school season.

This smashing good cocktail offers a sweet salute to summer—reflecting on the passed season’s refreshing notes while looking forward to the future and all of fall's offerings.

While grapes are usually left to the wineries when it comes to cocktails, we find this fizzy drink to be just the remedy for those facing the post-summer blues.

This gentle, yet juicy pairing of green grapes and basil offers an earthy answer to our happy hour prayers—especially after a long day of back-to-school shopping or running errands.


1/2 cup green grapes

6  fresh basil leaves

2 tablespoon lemon juice

2 tablespoon  simple syrup

1 tablespoon  honey

4 ounces vodka

4  ounces soda water



Line the bottom of a cocktail shaker with the grapes; using a muddler or spoon smash the grapes until all skins are completely broken and a thick, juicy pulp has formed.

Next, pour the contents of the shaker through a fine mesh sieve into a bowl and reserve the juice.

Give your cocktail shaker a rinse and then place the basil leaves in bottom. Using your spoon or muddler, gently mash just enough to release their fragrant oils.

Pour in the grape juice you set aside, the lemon juice and simple syrup. Stir the mixture a bit before topping with ice and honey. Shake vigorously and pour into your glass.

Top off the cocktail with soda water for some fizz and garnish with a few frozen grapes for extra refreshment.
