Spicy Jalapeno Bloody Maria

Bloody Marys are a staple at brunch and early tailgates. And even though the mixer recipe varies from person to person, restaurant to restaurant, a good vodka makes all the difference. Or does it? Have you ever tried a Bloody Mary with tequila instead for a Bloody Maria?

Although each person has his or her preferred way to enjoy a Bloody Mary – some like more horseradish, some like more lemon juice – IMHO, a Bloody Mary isn't good unless there's some spice. I like all my Bloody Marys on the spicier side (hence my Spicy Sriracha Bloody Mary recipe), but it's always tough to get the right level of spice with just hot sauce or chopped up jalapenos.



Too much, and you risk burning your mouth off. Too little, and you might as well be drinking tomato juice. For this Bloody Maria, I tweaked a classic mixer recipe a little bit and added jalapeno tequila for the perfect amount of spice. Tanteo's Jalapeno Tequila kicks the recipe up just the right amount, without making it too mouth-on-fire spicy. 

Bloody Marias are the perfect drink to mix up for a brunch, before an early football game or just if you want a tequila cocktail to accompany your Mexican fare. While making my drink, I was snacking on Jalapeno Popcorn from The Popcorn Factory. The flavor complemented the drink nicely, and would be a great snack to serve alongside your Spicy Bloody Marias at a tailgate, brunch or just during cocktail hour. 



Bloody Maria Mixer Recipe:

  • 4 cups tomato juice
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons horseradish
  • 1 tablespoon juice from jar of pickled jalapenos 
  • Juice from 2 small limes
  • Juice from 1/2 medium lemon
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper, plus more to granish
  • Pinch of salt, plus more to garnish
  • Tanteo Jalapeno Tequila

Optional Garnishes:

  • Celery stalks
  • Pickled jalapeno slices
  • Jalapeno peppers (full peppers and slices)
  • Lime wedges
  • Lemon wedges
  • Jalapeno-stuffed olives
  • Pepperoncinis
  • Cornichons

In a small pitcher or carafe, combine tomato juice, Worcestershire sauce, horseradish, pickled jalapeno juice, lime juice, lemon juice, salt and papper. Stir well. 

Rim mason jars or margarita glasses with salt and pepper mix. Add ice, then add 2-3 ounces of jalapeno tequila to each glass. Mix in Bloody Maria mixer, and stir well.

Garnish with your favorite toppings. Add a straw, and serve. 

Makes: About 8 Bloody Marias
