Spicy Grapefruit Jalapeño Margarita

Mexican food (at least the Americanized version we've grown to love) is best when it's spicy. Throw a few jalapeño slices on some nachos or tacos, and you've given the meal a much-needed kick. But have you ever tried adding jalapeños to your margarita?

Since we love jalapeño in guacamole, salsa and fajitas, it's no surprise the spicy pepper tastes to delicious in a margarita. The balance of spiciness from the jalapeno, the tartness of the lime and the sweetness of the sugar or agave makes for a perfect cocktail flavor combination.

You can always make your own jalapeño-infused tequila, as our expert Rachel Hollis explains, and it's not even that complicated. But when you create your own jalapeño tequila, you run the risk of making it to unbearably spicy, or not spicy enough. Who wants to deal with the mystery science behind finding the perfect flavored tequila?

Enter store-bought jalapeño tequila, which comes already bottled and perfectly spiced, ready for your spicy cocktails. I used Tanteo, which has just the right amount of spice. It has enough of a jalapeño flavor for a noticeable kick, but isn't too spicy for the sensitive drinkers.

Tanteo has their own signature spicy margarita recipe, but I wanted to add some fresh citrus from another fruit. I opted for grapefruit, since the tartness and sweetness balances out nicely with the jalapeño . Mix in some filtered water, agave and lime juice, and you have the ultimate spicy-sweet margarita.

This drink is seriously so good, you guys. I can't wait to make a big batch for my pals for Cinco de Mayo, and all of my upcoming summer pool parties. And if you buy jalapeno tequila, the hardest step is already done for you.

Adjust the amount of agave nectar to your likeness, depending on how sweet you want the drink. A little goes a long way, but it helps balance out the strong spicy flavor. I also garnished the glass with an oversized grapefruit wheel, which looks a little over-the-top, but I think gives it a fun pop pf pink.

  • 2 ounces Jalapeno-infused tequila (I used Tanteo)
  • 2 ounces fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice
  • 1 ounce lime juice
  • 1 ounce filtered water (optional)
  • 1-2 teaspoons agave nectar
  • Sugar, for the rim (optional)
  • Grapefruit and jalapeño slice for garnish (optional)

Rim a cocktail glass or mason jar with the sugar, and fill with ice.

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice, then add tequila, grapefruit juice, lime juice, water and agave. Shake well.

Pour into cocktail glass or mason jar, over ice. Garnish with grapefruit wheel and jalapeño slice.

Makes: 1 margarita
