BBQ Party Favor Gift Jars: Take-Home Sweet & Sour Chili Sauce

Sometimes the best party favors are the ones your guests can take home and enjoy all summer long.

I love giving sauces as party favors; it gets everyone excited about trying something new, and makes gift giving less costly than creating party bags. This summer, we are skipping the BBQ sauce and embracing a more modern take on summer grilling, taking inspiration from a firecracker. We’ll be grilling chicken, fish, beef, and vegetables, offering this dip as a compliment to our menu, and then passing out our firecracker in a jar once the party is over.

This Sweet and Sour Chili Sauce is full or aroma, packs a punch and is so simple to make, that you can whip up a batch in under 20 minutes.

I used traditional canning jars, but the sauce looks amazing in a tall bottle too. To decorate the jars, I cut a circle from firecracker themed craft paper to adorn the inner lid and then tied a simple red ribbon around the jar. Or you can keep it a surprise by placing the jar inside a fabric party bag, and tying a ribbon around the top.

Ingredients
  • 1 cup white granulated sugar
  • 1 cup of water, plus 2 tablespoons
  • ½ cup of rice wine vinegar
  • 3 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 3 Birds Eye Chili, diced
  • 1 tablespoon of corn flour
  • 1 cup of cilantro stems, chopped
  • Splash of grapesead oil
Directions

Add your cilantro and water to a small pot and simmer at a rolling boil for 5 minutes to infuse the water, then strain and allow it to rest.

In a small frying pan, pan fry your garlic and chili in grapsead oil until golden brown, then remove from the heat.

Add your sugar, vinegar and cilantro infused water to a saucepan, and boil for 10 minutes before adding the chili and garlic. Reduce the heat to a simmer.

In a small bowl, whisk the corn flour and extra water together until it is runny, and then add it to the pot. Stir the blend and cook for a further 10 minutes, or until it is nice and thick.

Allow the sauce to cool to room temperature before placing in airtight jars and decorating. Keep refrigerated until you are ready to pass them out at the party.
