Tailgating Recipe for Crockpot Sloppy Joes

Making homemade sloppy joes could be intimating. I know it might seem so much easier to just buy the mix in the can and enjoy them that way. But making sloppy joes is much easier than you may think!

By cooking the sloppy joe mix in t he crockpot, this dish requires very little active work time. All you do is prep the ingredients, throw them all in the pot, and let the slow cooker do the work—done and done!

Ingredients
  • 2 pounds ground beef (for a healthier substitute, use lean ground beef or turkey)
  • 1 large green bell pepper, diced
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 14-ounce cans of crushed tomatoes
  • 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 teaspoons pepper
  • Hamburger buns, for serving
Directions

Place all the ingredients (except the hamburger buns) in the crockpot: ground beef, diced bell pepper, diced onion, minced garlic, crushed tomatoes, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Turn the crockpot to high; let cook for about 6 hours.

Once 6 hours has lapsed, remove the top from the crockpot and check the meat. The juices should be boiling and the meat should no longer be red. If it looks done, turn the crockpot off and leave the top on until ready to serve. If you won’t be ready to serve the sloppy joes for a few hours, turn the crockpot to low.

Once ready to serve*, preheat the oven to 400 degrees and place the hamburger buns on a baking sheet. Place the hamburger buns in the oven to slightly toast, about 5-7 minutes.

To serve, place a large scoop of sloppy joes inside of the hamburger buns. Enjoy immediately! For easy serving, you can just place the hamburger buns next to the sloppy joy mix and have each person serve him or herself. (The sloppy joe mix can be ahead of time and warmed right before serving, if necessary.)

*If you are serving these sloppy joes where you have no oven/electricity, don’t worry about toasting the buns. The sloppy joe mix will stay warm if you make it at home and keep it in the closed crockpot.
