Yellow Submarine Party Dessert

The yellow submarine from the 1968 animated film of the same name is almost as iconic as the Beatles themselves. Equal parts whimsical and psychedelic, the yellow submarine is at home at a party as it is in Pepperland. Piling nostalgia on top of nostalgia, we’ve transformed another 20th century icon, the Twinkie, into little, edible submarines.

These unsinkable snacks can be enjoyed by the whole family—whether you lived through Beatlemania or are just fascinated by the movie’s trippy color scheme. While one yellow submarine was all it took to help the Beatles escape the Blue Meanies, we think a fleet of subs better suits the party table!

Ingredients:

1 box of Twinkies or similar snack cake

1 package chocolate coated candy such as M&Ms or Reese’s Pieces

Frosting

Flexible straws in yellow or other bright colors

Directions:

Separate your candies by color, you’ll need three for each submarine. We picked all the yellow ones out of a bag of Reese’s Pieces, but feel free to experiment with color—the Beatles did!

Using the smallest amount of frosting, dab each candy (letter side down) and firmly press it against the Twinkie to create windows.

Next cut each straw about an inch from the top, preserving the bendable part, so it looks like a periscope. Insert straw segments into top of Twinkies and bend to create a right angle.

For extra points, create psychedelic waves using brightly colored craft paper and display it around your fleet of submarines!
