Ban the Boring: Creative Twists on Traditional Thanksgiving Recipes

Every year, the Thanksgiving menu is roughly the same; turkey, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie. This year, take a more bold approach to your Thanksgiving feast with these creative recipe upgrades.

Savory Sides

Instead of making standard roasted or baked mashed potatoes, this year I’m leaving the skins on and making these Loaded Sweet Potato Skins. These loaded skins have some sweet toppings, such as marshmallows, cinnamon sugar pecans and cream cheese. It's definitely different than the standard baked sweet potatoes.

We all love mashed potatoes on the table for Thanksgiving, but a healthier option for all your paleo guests are these Garlic Rosemary Cauliflower Mashed 'Potatoes.' With fresh herbs and spices and some butter (it is Thanksgiving, after all!) this lower-calorie mash is a more diet-friendly option.

Roasted Brussels sprouts are becoming a trendy commonplace side dish, but add a little something extra for your Thanksgiving table. The Pear & Blue Cheese Roasted Brussels Sprouts recipe has sweet and tangy ingredients for a savory side even the pickiest of eaters will love.

Tasty Cocktails

If you and your guests are tired of the standard glass of wine at dinner, try serving up a unique cocktail or punch recipe. This Autumn Pear Mojito is a great way to bring the refreshing summer beverage well into fall. Another great fall punch recipe is this Apple Pear Punch uses the sweetest fruits of the season for a delicious cocktail that everyone will enjoy.

Decadent Dessert

These mini pumpkin pies are even better than they look, because they are mini Pumpkin Pie Jell-O Shots! Your guests will love the yummy drinks, as well as the fun twist on a staple thanksgiving dessert!

Pumpkin pie is a staple at any Thanksgiving dessert table, but sometimes it gets boring and predictable. Enter my Pumpkin Pie Dessert Lasagna, which is great in addition to, or in place of, standard pumpkin pie.

The Next Day: Delicious Leftovers

The day after Thanksgiving, when my fridge is filled with leftover turkey I can never figure out what to make. This Turkey and Cranberry Leftovers Quesadilla is the answer to the daunting dilemma. Make leftovers for the rest of the family with not much effort.

Don't Forget: Creative Centerpieces

Instead of the standard cornucopia or plastic leaves, upgrade your tablescape with a unique Thanksgiving centerpiece. We love the idea of taking flowers and placing them in a carved pumpkin, like our expert Mar Jennings did with this 1-800 Flowers arrangement. You can also display a cornucopia filled with fresh flowers, like this arrangement available on 1800Flowers.com.
