Satisfying Smoothies: 6 Must-Make Recipes

Juice bars are a great place to stop for a healthy snack... if you have a disposable income, and don't mind spending $9 on a blended fruit concoction. Luckily, mixing up your own smoothie could not be easier.

Plus, you are in control of what exactly goes in your smoothie, so you don't have to worry about unwanted sugars, syrups and fattening bases. A good, healthy smoothie really hits the spot when you have a hankering for something fruity and satisfying, and it won't consume your day's worth of calories.

All you need is a blender, some fruit and a base of your choice. Whether you mix up your smoothies with Greek yogurt, almond milk or protein powder, there's definitely a recipe for everyone. If fresh fruit isn't in season or available, opt or bags of frozen fruit at the grocery store. The produce is bagged when it's at its peak, so the fruit will taste delicious when blended together. Plus, you won't have to add many ice cubs if you use frozen fruit since the concoction will be cold enough on its own.

For a healthier smoothie, toss in some spinach leaves, like Katie Meyers did in her Mama's Mixed Berry Smoothie. Another filling and super healthy recipe is Adriane Kiss' Very Berry Smoothie, which includes flax seeds and almond milk.

If mixed berries are too boring, try this delicious Pom-Pom Pomegranate smoothie, made with Greek yogurt, pomegranate juice and cranberry juice. Another exotic option is the Lychee Coconut Tropical Smoothie, which includes lychee juice and super-hydrating coconut water.

Of course, you can always spike any of these recipes with rum, gin or vodka for a less-healthy (but super fun) adult treat. But to make it easier, we've already created a spiked recipe with this Spiked Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie. Yum!
