Edible Thanksgiving Turkey Craft for Kids

We are serious believers that the best craft projects are the ones that you can actually eat at the end, too! This simple Thanksgiving craft project is fun, edible, and keeps kids out of the kitchen if you’re busy cooking on Turkey Day.

So fetch some apples and the fitting accoutrements and grab the kids so they can craft their very own Thanksgiving Turkey. Make them feel special by using the cute finished turkeys as part of your Thanksgiving dinner centerpiece as well – a sure conversation starter!

Supplies
  • A large red apple
  • Large and mini sized marshmallows: (one large, and at least 20 small marshmallows)
  • 7 Large toothpicks per apple (you can find these at any craft store.) Regular toothpicks also do just fine
  • 20 Raisins
  • 20 Dried Cranberries
  • 1 walnut piece per apple
Directions

Step 1: Place the apple on a flat surface and remove the stem as close to the apple as possible.

Step 2: Poke a toothpick into the apple on the outer rim behind where the stem was. Place at least six other toothpicks fanning out behind the stem to represent the tail feathers.

Step 3: Once the toothpicks are in place, slide a raisin onto the first one, then a mini marshmallow, then a cranberry, in a pattern. Repeat this on all six toothpicks. Be sure the pattern ends with the mini marshmallow at the top so the tip of the toothpick is no longer exposed. Encourage kids to create their own patterns if they’d like!

Step 4: For the face of the turkey: Place another toothpick in front of the six toothpicks on the opposite side of the stem. Gently press the large marshmallow onto the toothpick.

Step 5: Using scissors, snip tiny slits into the spots where the eyes and the beak will go. Press a raisin into each eye hole, and a walnut piece for its beak!

Makes: 1 apple turkey
