Humans of New York Photographer Inspires Creativity & Support

Brandon Stanton moved to New York City in 2010 with two suitcases and a dream – to be a successful photographer, despite having no formal experience.

As a budding artist struggling to get by, Brandon found inspiration in the streets of New York. He was fascinated by all of the different kinds of people he encountered, and started photographing people on the street.

"I didn't have money to go out, I didn't have money to go to bars, or anything like that. All I did all day long for about six months was photograph," he says in a video posted by Facebook Stories on Vimeo. "That's all I did."

A few months and thousands of photos later, Brandon finally uploaded his pieces of work to Facebook, under a page called Humans of New York. He quickly gained fans and followers, and had finally found his niche – photographing the intriguing people he encountered in the Big Apple.

"I think we walk down the street and we see all these people and we do kind of wonder about their stories," he says in the piece. "The celebrations and the victories. That's what people are engaging with."

Every day, Brandon posts several photos of people he has met, along with a little anecdote or a longer personal story. Some quotes are funny, some inspirational and others downright tragic. But by sharing these intimate bits and pieces of New Yorkers' lives, he has found a real community online -- to the tune of 2.8 million Facebook likes. The Facebook page has led to a New York Times best-selling book, and thousands of dollars raised for charity.

"What I really hope to maintain is the culture of positivity," he says. "Of celebration and support that these people share."

The amateur-turned-successful photographer has used his exposure to give voices to the voiceless, and to foster a sense of community. While he celebrates the Humans of New York, we celebrate him and his work.
