Boozy Espresso Ice Cream Dessert: The Tipsy Affogato

Did you know that the word affogato means "drowned" in Italian? Perhaps that’s why this creamy frozen treat is just so simply perfect – it’s just rich vanilla ice cream that is drowned by strong espresso. 

We added a delightful touch to the recipe by mixing in some Amaretto – a liqueur with strong hints of almonds. Sprinkle with dark chocolate shavings for a gourmet dessert that takes almost no time to make!

We served ours in giant wine glasses, which make for gorgeous serving. Plus, you probably already have red wine glasses in your cabinet, so adding that extra touch of presentation won't cost you a thing! Make these for your next dinner party as a grand finale dessert, or just in honor of National Ice Cream Day on July 20!



  • Two high-end dessert glasses (we used big wine glasses)
  • Two scoops vanilla ice cream
  • Two shots espresso or very strong coffee
  • Two shots of Amaretto (you can also use Frangelico or Cognac)
  • Dark chocolate shavings for garnish


In each glass, spoon out one scoop of vanilla ice cream. Top with espresso and Amaretto. Garnish with chocolate shavings.
