4 Edible Sesame Street Centerpieces for a Kids Birthday Party

Inspired by one of my son’s favorite Sesame Street books on Healthy Foods, Funny Food Faces by Laurent Linn and John E. Barrett, we made these colorful centerpieces for his Sesame Street themed second birthday party. All of these edible party projects were easy and fun to assemble together.

Edible Bert

Supplies

1/2 yellow squash, cut lengthwise
1 black olive cut in half
1 new potato (raw) cut in half
Black and red Licorice
1 lemon slice, cut in half
1/2 artichoke, cut lengthwise
Can of white frosting
1 Roma tomato
Toothpicks

Directions

Step 1: Use ready-made white frosting to create a paste.

Step 2: Set squash to base, leaving enough room for artichoke.

Step 3: Set artichoke to base followed by lemons.

Step 4: Cut toothpicks in half and assemble nose, eyebrows and mouth.

Step 5: For eyes, use a small bit of frosting to and attach new potatoes squash, add olives and secure both with a toothpick.

Edible Cookie Monster

Supplies

Box of Fruit Loops
White frosting
Blue food coloring
Raisins
Chocolate chip cookies
Black olives

Directions

Step 1: Separate all the blue loops out of the cereal box.

Step 2: Dye a small amount of frosting blue.

Step 3: Spread blue frosting on base in the shape of a gum ball machine.

Step 4: Attach loops to frosting leaving a half circle for the mouth.

Step 5: Fill the half circle with raisins.

Step 6: Add two circles of white frosting to head for eyes, add black olives, one olive looking up and one looking down.

Step 7: Put random dots of white frosting on base and attach cookies in a random pattern.

Edible Elmo

Supplies

Fresh strawberries, sliced in half lengthwise
1 raw new potato, sliced in half
1 black olive, sliced in half
White frosting
Red food dye
1 Roma Tomato
Raisins
Toothpicks

Directions

Step 1: Dye frosting red

Step 2: Spread in a circle on base

Step 3: Attach strawberries leaving space for mouth, nose and eyes

Step 4: For mouth, fill half circle with raisins

Step 5: For eyes, attached potato to frosting and secure olives with toothpicks

Step 6: Attach nose to frosting

Edible Ernie Centerpiece

Supplies

1/2 grapefruit
1 lemon slice cut in half
Red and black licorice
1 raw new potato, cut in half lengthwise
1 black olive cut in half
1 cherry tomato
White frosting
Toothpicks

Directions

Step 1: Spread frosting on base in shape of a gum ball machine.

Step 2: Place half grapefruit face down.

Step 3: Alternate red and black licorice for shirt.

Step 4: Cut different lengths of black licorice for hair.

Step 5: Apply lemons for ears.

Step 6: Attach tomato with toothpick.

Step 7: Attach eyes with toothpick to secure potato and olive.
