60s Themed 40th or 50th Birthday Party: Decorations

Depending on the mood of your fete, you can either go mod 60s with a black and white decorating scheme, or you can opt for an all-out psychedelic experience with bright tie-dye colors, flowers and happy faces.

Mod Decorations:

For a mod decorating scheme, try to eliminate the color in your home as much as possible. You can do this by:

1. Renting white mod-themed furniture for the evening, along with 60s style lamps and lighting.

2. Purchasing a few yards of white fabric and covering colored pillows, couches, and chairs for the evening.

3. Also, add plenty of sparkling elements for a pretty pop. Crystal candleholders, mirrors, and touches of silver (in the form of frames, serving trays, decorative bowls filled with silver bulbs, etc.) will look perfect in a mod party setting.

Psychedelic Party Decorations:

If you love crazy party decorations, opt for the psychedelic 60s look for the birthday party. Here's how:

1. Greet guests with a large door hanging of the iconic bright yellow smiley face in lieu of a wreath.

2. Hit up your local Salvation army or thrift shop and find a cheap sheet set. Tie dye the set, and hang the large sheet over your couch. Tuck the ends into the cushions and arms to create a tie-dye slipcover. Place the pillow covers over your regular decorative pillows and fold over the excess fabric onto the back of the pillow. Use two or three safety pins to pin the extra fabric flat onto the back for psychedelic home decor.

3. Hang some psychedelic artwork on your walls for a groovy feel. Do this the cheap and cheery way by typing in "Psychedelic Art" into your Google Image search, and printing out a few of the best, highest resolution images you find.
