Before you start throwing together different decorations, take a few minutes to brainstorm a theme. Come up with a cohesive design scheme for the party's decorations that makes sense for the formality of the event as well as the guest of honor's personality.
How to Pick a Theme
1. Choose a strong color scheme. You can base it on the seasons, on the birthday boy or girl's favorite colors, or on the party's theme.
2. Choose an era that the guest of honor enjoys (1940s, 50s, 80s, or 20s, etc.) and subtly weave key elements from that decade into the décor. Unless it truly is a theme party though, be careful not to go overboard!
3. Use Décor cues from the birthday person's favorite sport, hobby, or season. It's always best to make it personal.
