SpongeBob Candy Treasure Chest Birthday Cake

Turn a store-bought cake into a Candy Treasure Chest Birthday Cake overflowing with chocolate coins, gummy fish, and a little SpongeBob SquarePants!

Ingredients
  • 9x13-inch chocolate cake from a grocery store bakery with chocolate frosting

  • 2 to 3 cans chocolate frosting

  • 1 can white frosting

  • Blue food coloring

  • Yellow, red, and blue colored fondant

  • Assorted candy: gold foil-covered chocolate coins, gummy fish, candy necklaces, Tootsie Rolls, SpongeBob candies, etc...

  • Spongebob cake figure or candle

  • Additional Materials:

  • Large cake board

  • @9x6 1/2-inch block dry floral foam

  • Aluminum foil

  • @8-inch bamboo skewers

  • Mini star cookie or canapĂ© cutters

Steps
  • Mix blue food coloring with white frosting to make an ocean blue color. Ice the cake board.

  • Cut 9x13-inch cake in half to make two 9x6 1/2-inch cakes. If your store-bought cake has icing decorations on top scrape them off.

  • Place a 9x6 1/2-inch cake in the center of the iced cake board. Ice the top of the cake with the chocolate frosting and place the other 9x6 1/2 -inch cake on top.

  • Ice the entire cake with chocolate frosting. Use a bamboo skewer or a fork to create lines in the frosting that resemble the wood grain on a treasure chest.

  • Use a knife to round the top of the floral foam to make the treasure chest lid proportionate to your cake. Wrap the lid completely with foil. Ice the entire surface of the lid with chocolate frosting and create the wood grain like you did in the cake.

  • Insert 2 bamboo skewers into the bottom of the lid near the center. Position the lid on top of the cake. Slide the skewers into the cake to hold the lid in place. (The candy on top will also help to keep it open and in place.)

  • Add candy to the top of the cake and overflowing down the sides as in the picture. Place gummy fish and candy on the cake board around the base of the treasure chest. Press down on the candy if necessary or use more frosting to help keep the candy in place. Plop a SpongeBob figure or candle in the candy.

  • Roll out yellow fondant and cut 1-inch wide strips to make the straps on the treasure chest. Trim the strips to fit on your cake (see photo) and apply with a dab of water on the back of the strips to secure. Roll out the red and blue fondant and cut out shapes with a mini star cookie cutter to make accents on the yellow strips.

Refrigerate until its time to serve!
