Being an urban dweller, a night out in the city is sometimes all a girl needs after a busy week. I’ve planned my fair share of a girls night outs since moving to Manhattan four years ago. Recently, a few of my girlfriends from my hometown visited. So I had to show them what a typical New York City night consists of. And they certainly had a blast.
Here’s the anatomy of a Girls Night Out in the city.
Start Your Night Off With a Bar Meet Up
If you’ve got friends coming out who are coming from various neighborhoods, plan a central bar or lounge where you can meet up with everyone. I chose a rooftop bar/restaurant with beautiful views of the city and the Empire State Building. It was the perfect location to bring out-of-towners and meeting up with the rest of the accomplices for the evening.

Dine at the Quintessential City Restaurant
Make a reservation at that upscale and slightly pretentious restaurant you may be fearful of going to if you were alone. You know, the one that has trendy décor, amazing food and interesting people. Remind yourself that you’re cool too and just go! Enjoy a lovely dinner under dim lighting with your best gal pals.

Save Dessert for a Special Dessert Spot
Many big cities have restaurants that just serve up sweet confections. Don’t have dessert at the restaurant and trek to the nearest bakery or wine bar that specializes in desserts. It’s like adding a completely different dining experience only it’s to satisfy your sweet tooth. My friends and I stopped at a cupcake shop and enjoyed our fave cupcakes for a wonderful treat after our dinner.
Rest Up Before You Party Up
By the time 10PM rolled around, surprisingly enough we were kind of tired (and it’s not because we aren’t 22 anymore!). In an effort not to over exert ourselves, we decided to get lattes at a swanky hotel coffee shop. We ordered our caffeine fixes and watched the interesting clientele and groups of people who were passing through or getting drinks at the bar.
We replenished our energy to keep going for a few more hours and it was a nice break in between activities. After getting our coffee, we wandered to downtown NYC in search of our next spot, saw a couple celebrities and came across all sorts of interesting people out for the night.
How do they do that?!
Make Moves Like Jagger or Hang Out At a Lounge
Depending on what kind of mood everyone’s in, dance or talk the night away! Either find a fun club with great music to show off your dance moves, or find a nice lounge where everyone can still listen to music but talk and catch up at the same time. We found a lovely lounge and sat in the back corner to just talk for over an hour. It was a nice way to wind down the night as opposed to being in a dark and loud club. It was exactly what we needed.
Pancakes at 2AM Taste Better Than Pancakes at 10AM
No girls night out is complete without going to a diner and having breakfast! After our late night gab session, we had the sudden urge to have pancakes. We went to the classic NYC spot, the Waverly Diner, and had a diet-ruining breakfast. Since I enjoy anything a la mode, I ordered myself a Belgian waffle sundae topped with walnuts and hot fudge. Sigh. I’m still dreaming of it. Unfortunately, I did not take a photo as I was too busy stuffing my face. Sorry guys.
The girls night out was a night to remember. Since moving away, I seldom ever get to spend outings like that with my friends. It was so nice to just out with my girls and explore the city. I think the most successful girls night outs are when you don’t place any pressure on the evening, are open to plans changing and wearing comfortable shoes to wander in! When you keep an open mind without high expectations, you can find fun at any turn of the evening.
It was definitely one of my favorite girls night outs and hope I’ll get to share many more with them soon.
