A friend of mine and her husband are expecting their first child in August. While most couples will ask the doctor unceremoniously if it’s a boy or a girl they’ll be welcoming, my friends got creative. They gave me a call and asked me to partake in a big celebration around the announcement.
Rather than hear the word “boy” or “girl” from their doctor, my friends asked him to hand them a sealed envelope with the word written down on a paper inside. That envelope remained unopened until it turned up in my mailbox.
When I arrived home and saw the envelope there was a lot more emotion involved in opening it than I expected. For one thing, I was psyched to know before anyone else, even the parents, whether we’d be celebrating a boy or a girl’s arrival. Shortly thereafter, a wave of anxiety passed – could I keep it secret? I’m a bit of a gossip, but I committed. Luckily, the reveal party was set for Saturday afternoon and it was Thursday evening, so time was short.
I had planned out my approach for the reveal long before receiving my mysterious envelope. Part of that planning was spent poking around the internet looking for inspiration. While I’m a huge fan of the gumball in a cupcake approach, I really wanted my reveal to convey that suspense, excitement and happy moment of revelation I had seeing the single word on paper.

So, I ordered some personalized MyM&Ms – with question marks on them. To further convey that “is it a boy, or is it a girl” toss up I went with baby blue, pink and white M&Ms.
Then, I baked a cake – with a certain color inside. See where this is going?

I frosted the cake heavily in white frosting to completely hide the color inside. Then, to really make sure no one could catch a glimpse, I covered the cake in rows of my personalized M&Ms.
Saturday arrived with all my friends’ closest friends and family. We barbecued, talked baby and took sides as to what the real gender would be. I was the only one not allowed to partake, but I had my fun torturing everyone with the fact that I KNEW.
Our favorite course – dessert – arrived quite ceremoniously. The parents-to-be were absolutely crazy with excitement as were most of their guests.
I was honored to see everyone crowd around my cake oohing and ahhing, but my real joy was seeing the parents cut into the cake and squeal.

We’ll be welcoming a boy in August!
