It’s rare for one of my guy friends to stray from their normal beer or whiskey drink no matter the occasion, and while my DIY pumpkin keg is enough to dress up any favorite brew for Halloween, it’s tough coming up with a way to make a regular old glass of whiskey worthy of a fun Halloween party. Some people might argue a simple spooky label slapped on a bottle is enough, but no. I, and my guests, deserve something more!
While my fellow ladies and I had an endless array of Halloween martinis and cocktail recipes to choose from, I couldn't just say puh-tuh to the guys. I came across this Fred & Friends’ Bone Chiller ice cube tray during one of my many days of party shopping. It's not an item I'd pick up for any old day, but it fit my Halloween cocktail party perfectly.
There’s nothing new about ice tray molds, for sure, but one that appeals to both the men and women in the crowd and is spooky enough for a Halloween shindig?
In the week leading up to my party I just kept making ice with my two trays – all the finished pieces popped right out and I put it into an extra container I have in my freezer. Then, the night of the party they got put into my ice bucket. Not much work. In fact, not much to it at all. But this little tiny detail made such an impact! It's not easy to impress my guys, but skull ice cubes did it.
The ladies appreciated them, too - a few garnished their Black Widow martinis with them. And to make sure everyone, not just the whiskey or martini drinkers, had some skull and crossbones fun, I got creative.
As I was making my ice, I realized I could use the mold to make some chocolate. So, I melted both milk and white chocolate, then poured it into the mold and chilled.
Some of the wine drinkers enjoyed the idea of garnishing their drinks with a chocolate bone or two. It actually paired really well with the wine selection we had, but everyone at my party loved the spooky mini s’mores bar I set up.
My husband and I have been known as the s'more obsessed couple for years now - we actually gave homemade s'mores kits as favors after our wedding, and so, we usually offer up a version of our favorite treat at all our parties.
For being expected, these s'mores made a spooky hit and all I did was mold chocolate in my ice tray! More proof that what they say is true - attention to detail is most important!
