Learn about what it means to be a real Bourbon and how to implement it in your party in the best way possible.

What Is Bourbon?

In order to be called Bourbon, whiskey needs to be aged a minimum of two years in charred oak barrels. It's the charred oak that gives Bourbon its unique flavor - hints of smoke, toffee, vanilla and cloves. It's sweeter and smoother than your average whiskey.

Preparing For Your Party

For your tasting party, have a few different bottles of Bourbon on hand.

We recommend Maker's Mark, Basil Hayden, Woodford Reserve, and Hudson Baby Bourbon (which is actually made in New York State, not Kentucky!).

It might be a good idea to also have a bottle of Jack Daniel's or another whiskey as a "control group" so you can compare the differences between bourbon and straight-up whiskey. If your friends are bold, Bourbon is great served simply with just a few ice cubes. For the faint of heart, try our recipe for a Mint Julep.

Bourbon Desserts

Bourbon is also delicious when used in desserts. Whip up a batch of our Bourbon Balls for your tasting party. They're always a huge hit, and that way non-drinkers can experience the flavor profile of Bourbon without the intoxicating side effects.
