Put a new spin on your home decor with this festive and fun wreath created out of Mardi Gras beads you may have lying around. It is sure to add a decorative touch to your space, whatever the season.
Mardi Gras Beads – assorted colors
Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
Styrofoam Frame – purchased from craft store, or cut to desired shape/size
Spray Paint or Colored Caper to cover frame (optional)
Serrated knife (optional)
Step 1: Start with your frame. You can purchase a circular Styrofoam ring from the craft store, or you can create your own shape and size by cutting down a larger block of Styrofoam to your desired shape and size. I created a rectangular shape by connecting four edges with hot glue. When cutting Styrofoam, use a serrated knife and a sawing motion – it works much better than scissors for this material. As always, exercise caution when using sharp objects or hot glue.
Step 2: Since the frame will peek through in between the beads, I like to cover up the white base.
You can do this with spray paint, or by wrapping it in colored paper and hot glue as I did here. In either case, allow to dry before attaching the beads.
Step 3: Select your color scheme – alternate colors, use all one, or try a rainbow effect. Match your party décor or use holiday colors – whatever you’d like! Prepare your beads by snipping them at one point to create long strings. When using a circular frame, you can wrap the beads around the frame, but if you are working with a square or angled shape, it is best to line them up around the perimeter of the shape so as to avoid uneven beading and spacing around the corners.
Add small strips of hot glue a few inches at a time and press the beads into them, working your way around the frame and alternating colors as desired. Snip the beads to the needed length and add more as you go. Continue all the way around your frame until it is covered. If you are using a flat based frame, you do not need to cover the side that will face the wall or door.
Step 4: Hang it up and you’re ready for fun!
