Every year on March 8th, my mother and I would wake up to a bouquet of our favorite flowers and a fresh made breakfast for us to start the day off. Lucky for my father, International Women’s Day, is not celebrated as widely as Valentine’s Day or Mother’s Day, so he gets to avoid the florist rush by showing his appreciation for Mom and I on March 8th.
The holiday dates back as far as 1909, but it wasn’t until 1911 that the holiday became an international celebration when it's recognition spurred a rise in women’s rights movements in various countries. The first Women’s Day was actually celebrated as a national holiday in the United States in 1949. It was then that it was estbalished as a national holiday, always to fall on March 8th.
Although the holiday has a history related to the socialist and communist parties, today it is mostly celebrated as a day for men to show the women in their lives – wives, mothers, daughters – how much they are appreciated.
While Valentine’s Day is more about romance, and Mother’s Day is about celebrating Mom, International Women’s Day is a reason to celebrate any and every women for all that they do and have accomplished whether you're a man, woman, or child.
So, follow my Dad's lead and show the women in your lives how important they are by making this March 8th a memorable one for them.
Ways to Celebrate
Women’s Night Out
Some women in other countries celebrate this day by getting together with their closest gal pals and painting the town red. If you’d rather something more low-key, try hosting a girls only party at home or booking a few spots in your favorite day spa. Celebrate being a woman!
And if you're a dad looking to thank your wife for all she does for your family, give her the night off to spend it with friends.
Handmade with Love
Whether it's breakfast in bed for a particular woman, a batch of cupcakes for the hard-working ladies in your office or a handmade card for Mom, show your appreciation for the women in your life with a thoughtful gesture.
Traditionally, women receive bouquets upon bouquets of flowers for this holiday. It can be from a husband, brother, or even a boss or coworker. Yellow Mimosas are a popular choice for this holiday in countries like Russia and Italy, but flowers are just the beginning! Just like the other holidays celebrating our loved ones, there are so many ways to go above and beyond and make them just as happy as they make us.
Day of Relaxation
If you are looking for ways to thank that special lady in your life for all she does, let her know by giving her a break from all those chores and responsibilities. Plan a romantic spa evening at home with candles and sensual massage oils. Face and body masks are easily available at local drug stores. This gift is for a mother, friend, or daughter, you can still indulge in a day of relaxation by visiting a day spa in your area together.
