Turn inexpensive fabric placemats into whimsical ones from Thanksgiving dinner. Various fabric scraps keeps each one from looking just alike, plus, there is no need for perfection with the reverse applique technique.
Supplies
Fabric placemats
Scrap fabric
Pumpkin template (We used this one from Family Fun.)
Disappearing ink pen
Scissors
Utility knife
Straight pins
Sewing machine or needle and thread
Directions

Step 1: Cut out pumpkins from the pumpkin template.

Step 2: Trace the pumpkin onto the back of your fabric placemat.

Step 3: Use a utility knife to make a small cut on the stem of each pumpkin, and finish cutting them out with scissors.

Step 4: Place fabric scraps behind the openings attaching with straight pins.

Step 5: Turn the placemat over, and use a simple straight stitch to sew around each pumkin shape.

Step 6: If you like, use any leftover fabric to make napkins that match your new placemat.
