Create Brown Paper Horses

This simple, but impressive, craft is best for older kids who are able to cut paper. The technique is like making paper snowflakes but you cut out horse shapes instead. Kraft paper is a good material to use, and the horses make an interesting decoration for a Kentucky Derby party or a horse-loving kids room.

Supplies

  • roll of brown Kraft paper
  • horse template
  • scissors
  • masking tape
  • paint, crayons or markers (optional)

Directions

  • Print out a horse template to trace.
  • Cut Kraft paper into squares of any size. Bigger squares will make bigger horses.
  • Fold each square in half, and then fold this piece in half.
  • Place the template on the folded paper with the feet of the horse on one of the folds and the tail on the other fold. Use a piece of tape to secure.
  • Cut out the template starting at the top of the tail. Go around the top of the horse, the head and the front legs. Also, cut out the space underneath the horse body and the tail.
  • Remove the cut out horse shape and unfold.
  • You should have four horse shapes connected at the tails and feet. Depending on kids' preference, you can leave them together or cut them apart for individual horses.
  • If desired, let kids paint or color their horses.
