No, we aren’t serving hamburgers for dessert – just cupcakes that look like them!
One of the first things that drew our eye on the ‘All Things BBQ’ invite we picked out from Pear Tree Greetings was the hamburger image. We knew we wanted to incorporate this classic BBQ food throughout our celebration, so we didn’t stop with a make your own burger bar for lunch – we carried the theme into dessert.
These fun BBQ themed cupcakes are a great treat for the kids since they’re not your typical cupcake and they also combine yellow cake with brownies.
Though they may look complicated to make, these burger style cupcakes are actually a cinch to put together.
Ingredients
Yellow cake mix
Brownie mix
Vanilla frosting
Red, yellow, and green food coloring
Plastic bags for piping
Toothpick toppers (optional)
Directions
Mix up a yellow cake mix according to package and bake in cupcake pans. Allow your cupcakes to cool completely.
Meanwhile, bake brownies from a box according to their package. Again, allow to cool completely.
Once both your cupcakes and brownies are cool, divide vanilla frosting into 3 separate bowls. We kept it simple with store bought frosting, but you can of course make your own.
Add red, yellow and green food coloring to respective bowls and mix in the color.
Pour the colored frosting into regular plastic sandwich bags and cut a very small hole at the corner to use as your ‘tip’.
Carefully cut the yellow cupcakes in half (we suggest using a serrated knife).
Then, using a circle cookie cutter, cut out brownie circles and place one on the bottom half of a cupcake.
Pipe the red, yellow and green frosting onto each brownie circle to resemble ketchup (or tomato), mustard (or cheese) and lettuce (or pickles!) and top with the cupcake top.

To help keep the assembled dessert together (as well as for a special decorative touch) add an embellished toothpick topper like we did.
