Celebrate Dia de Los Muertos this year with a fiesta at home, complete with this crafty skull invitation.

If you're not familiar with the holiday, Dia de Los Muertos is a Mexican holiday that takes place on November 1st every year and is translated as the day of the dead. The holiday's celebrations focus on the gathering of family and friends to honor those loved ones who have died and still look over the living.

Dia de Los Muertos is known for its traditional festivals and parades decked out in beautiful sugar skulls and marigold decorations.

Invite your friends to celebrate Dia de Los Muertos with you on November 1st with these easy hand-painted invitations. E-cards are fine, but a handmade, hand-painted sugar skull invite is even better.

This fun project will not only spice up your Dia de Los Muertos celebration but is an easy project the kids can get involved in and will encourage them to get their creative juices flowing, too!

Materials

Blank white skull shaped cards
Markers
Paint
Colored pencils
Crayons
Glitter
Glue

Helpful hint: Certain craft or scrap booking stores sell the aforementioned, blank, white, skull cards in the Halloween or seasonal sections. However, if you can't find a cutout trace a skull on the front of a white sheet of paper.

Directions

Follow these simple instructions for your traditional and decorated sugar skull invitations for your Dia de Los Muertos celebration!

Step 1: You can either purchase skull shaped cards or cut them out yourself. On whichever side you choose to be the back of your card, include the appropriate invitation information: person's name, when, where, theme, dress code, etc.

Step 2: After this is complete you are ready to decorate! Remember, if you are using the glitter, use a small amount of glue on your design and sprinkle your card with glitter over a trash can to minimize the mess.

Step 3: Decorate your invitations however you choose. Have fun with this crafty invite and decorate each card differently or personalize them for each of your guests. Handmade invites are great, but a personalized, handmade invitation is even better!
