DIY Hanging Backdrop

The big focal point at my sister’s graduation was the dessert bar I put together – you can't have a “Smartie” Party without candy!

Rather than buying a generic plastic scene setter or spending a ton on a custom made backdrop I decided to make my own. My inspiration for this was the circular shape of the candies and the bright colors so many of them are made from.

Once I had all the supplies it honestly took all of a half an hour to create this. What really made it mess free and easy was the Glue Dots® I found. (I’ll never use a glue gun again!)

Here’s the how-to so you can recreate – this project can be used for any occasion, just leave off the grad cap embellishments or replace them with another kind that’s appropriate.

Supplies

Permanent Glue Dots Dispenser®
Ribbon (I used a 1-inch wide white)
Cardstock in desired color scheme
2-inch paper puncher
Any desired embellishments (I used grad cap ones I found at the craft store)

Directions

Step 1: Begin by punching out your circles from the cardstock. Though you could trace and cut these, I suggest investing in a hole puncher to make the process faster and the circles uniformed in size.

Step 2: Once you have your circles ready cut your ribbon into equal pieces. My ribbons fit 15 circles and measured about 5 1/2 feet in length.

Step 3: Next, lie your ribbons on a flat table surface to assemble. My table was wide enough and long enough to fit all 8 ribbons that I made, which was really helpful when creating a cohesive look. If you can’t fit that, try lying two so spacing between each circle is even.

Step 4: After your ribbons are laid out, begin attaching the circles. To do this, simply press and roll your Permanent Glue Dots Dispenser® over the ribbon where you want to place the circle. One Glue Dot® will do the trick, but I used two since my decorations were hung outside. Once the Glue Dots® are on the ribbon place a circle on top of it. That’s it!

Step 5: Repeat the process for each circle. I kept my circles about 2 inches apart.

Step 6: Once all your circles have been attached to the ribbon you can embellish. I used my Permanent Glue Dots Dispenser® to adhere grad cap embellishments I found at the craft store to various circles.

I hung my ribbon backdrop out in the yard along our fence and it looked fantastic. The Removable Glue Dots® I used to secure the ribbons to the fence did such a good job that I went out the day after the party to clean up and they looked as good as they did when I first hung them. (Don't use the Permanent Glue Dots® to attach your ribbons to the hanging surface.)
