DIY Heart Art Decorations for Valentine's Day

Celebrate Valentine's Day with a large, graphic statement on your wall with these crafted wire hearts. This project can be customized with an array of materials in any color to suit your style. Using coat hangers as a base, you could probably even put these together with items you already have at home. This would be perfect for a dinner party around this day of love!

To suit my theme of a wintery, eclectic, and modern Valentine's Day, I used all different material in neutral tones. These were made to coordinate with the painted book table runner and the modern cupid’s arrows centerpiece.

Supplies:

Wire coat hangers

Pliers

String/ribbon of choice (yarn, lace, twine, burlap, ribbon, etc.)

Hot glue gun

Small command hooks

Directions:

Step 1: Using large pliers, cut off the curved loop at the top of the hanger. 

Step 2: Then, bend and manipulate wire into a basic heart shape. The twisted part of the hanger (which was once at the top) becomes the bottom point of the heart shape. It's okay if the shape isn’t perfect – they’re supposed to have a handmade, organic feel.

Step 3: Choose a material that comes in long strands – yarn, lace, twine, ribbon, burlap, etc. Secure one end of your material to the bottom of the heart with hot glue. Then, stretch the strand across the shape and secure on the wire with a dot of glue.

Continue to crisscross the strand back and forth across all areas of the shape, securing with glue along the way. When the entire heart is filled in with overlapping lines, snip off the remaining material.

Step 4: Repeat the same process on other wire heart forms. You can make a bunch out of the same material for a streamlined look, or try using all different items and colors for a more eclectic feel.

Step 5: Once all your hearts are made, lay them out to decide on an arrangement for the wall. Then, hang them up using one or two small nails or small command hooks per heart. 

Step 6: You could also use one of these hearts to hang on a door for a Valentine’s Day wreath!
