Nothing says “Happy Holidays!” like a gift from the kitchen with a handmade gift tag – at least that’s how we feel!
I love turning my kitchen into a gift factory over the holiday season and my kitchen table into a crafting station bursting with handmade gift tags. Personalized and hand crafted tags offer a customized touch to a handmade gift, and require little skill, cost or time beyond the store bought options. I used the premade gift tags, but should time and crafting skills abound, reach for scrapbooking paper to create your own for a more festive and personalized impact your recipient will appreciate even more.
The technique here of using fingerprint stamps is particularly great should you like to get the kids involved. Grandma, grandpa, other relatives, teachers or sitters will really adore a fingerprint tag from them!
1 package of medium sized white or natural toned gift tags
Ribbon or twine
Paper blade or Scissors (optional)
Brown Paint or stamp ink (optional)
Black and Red Pen
Holiday Stickers (optional)
(Optional) Step 1: If you are not using pre-cut gift tags, trace out your tag shape from your selected scrapbooking paper. While it may take extra effort, handmade tags will offer you a greater freedom with the shapes of your tags. Not a great drawer? Try using your cookie cutters as guides and trace shapes from them!
Step 2: Using your ink pad, press your finger or thumb into the ink pad and then apply a soft fingerprint to the tag, this will act as your reindeer head. Make as many imprints as you’d like to get the effect you are after, but be aware that the darker, or more pressed, prints will lose definition and look less like a finger print.
Step 3: Next, draw on the antlers and eyes using a black pen, and then accent with a red nose using your red pen.
Step 4: Decorate your tag with any additional holiday stickers, drawings, messages or even scrapbooking paper. If using scrapbooking paper cut out to decorate your tag, seal them with Mod Podge and then allow them to dry before attaching them to your gift.
Step 5: Attach a ribbon or twine to the top of the gift tag and then tie it on to your holiday package.
