Throwing an under the sea themed party? These DIY octopus yarn dolls would make the perfect favor for your little guests. Better yet, have them get in on the crafting fun and set up a "make your own octopus" station at your party.
If you want to save on time, you could pre-wrap and tie yarn skeins together (see step 1 – 3). Your guests will just need to braid and decorate. They are sure to love crafting up their own octopuses.
Wiggle Eyes (I used 15mm)
24 inch Board or Cardboard
Step 1: Wrap half a skein of yarn around a 24 inch board or cardboard. Wrap the entire skein for 2 dolls or if you are using a styrofoam ball larger than 3 inches.
Step 2: Cut yarn off of board at both ends of the board, so you have 2 piles of yarn approximately 24 inches long. If you used only half a skein, combine the piles. If you wrapped the entire skein of yarn and are making 2 dolls, each pile of yarn will be a doll.
Step 3: From your pile, remove 2 pieces of yarn. With the first piece, tie the pile of yarn together at the top to form hair. You can trim the hair to all one length once it is securely tied together.
Step 4: Place a styrofoam ball in the middle of the wrapped yarn and smooth yarn around the ball so there isn’t any white showing. Take the second piece of yarn you removed from the pile, wrap and tie it around the ball, underneath the ball.
Step 5: Separate yarn into 8 pieces and braid each piece, using a coordinating yarn color to tie off the ends. Trim the ends so they are all of equal lengths.
Step 6: Attach wiggle eyes to the yarn wrapped styrofoam ball using a glue gun. You can leave your octopus doll plain or add other embellishments such as hats, bows, etc.
