To celebrate my daughter’s new favorite show, Doc McStuffins on Disney Junior, she and I spent an afternoon baking in the kitchen. We had such a ball making these Doc McStuffin cupcakes and any child who’s a fan of the show we’ll enjoy this activity, too.
Draw on the "O" in the Doc McStuffins logo to create these lovely cupcakes with heart bandages – it might not be just what the doctor ordered, but there is an apple involved!
White fondant (to be dyed red and brown also)
Red and brown food coloring
Drinking Glass, Bottle Caps (from spice bottles), Heart (toy), misc items to use as cutters (or actual cookie cutters if you’ve got them)
Baked Cupcakes – we sprinkled bits of caramelized apples into our batter before baking
Step 1: Once your cupcakes are cooled, create your white fondant base by rolling out the white fondant – sprinkle with Confectioner’s sugar to keep it from sticking as you roll it – you want to try to get it as thin as possible without ripping it.
Step 2: Use a regular drinking glass (or round cookie cutter if you have it) to cut out a circle from the rolled out fondant. Cut enough to cover each cupcake.
Step 3: Spread a very thin layer of frosting onto each cupcake and gently place the white fondant on top.
Step 4: Next, create your open red circle. To do this, use food coloring to dye a portion of your leftover fondant red. Knead the fondant to work in the color, then roll out as you did the white once it’s the hue you need.
Step 5: Repeat the cut out process as above, but with a slightly smaller circle. Then, cut out a portion of the inside using an even smaller cutter to achieve the open circle look.
Step 6: Set the red fondant circle atop the white with a thin layer of frosting.
Step 7: To make the band aid, you could use graham crackers, or if you had left over fondant as we did, you can use that. To create the band-aid from fondant, use food coloring to dye it a light brown, roll it out as before and cut to resemble a band-aid shape. We cut a rectangle to fit across the width of the cupcake and set a square shape in the center of that to achieve the look.
Step 8: Finally, cut a heart shape from your left-over red fondant and place on top of the band aid.
