Holiday Table Setting Tips

More Party Ideas

1. Get Organized

Get a head start on your table by successfully organizing the elements.

  • Clean your dinnerware to remove any stains or damage you may have previously overlooked.
  • Inventory your china and see if any cracked or chipped pieces need to be replaced.
  • Make a list of tableware and decorative items you'll need to buy, such as serving pieces, linens, candles and flowers.

2. Select Dinnerware

Create a distinctive table setting that is true to your personality by mixing and matching items from a variety of sources.

  • Combine a variety of complementary-but not matching-dishes, cups and platters that have the same motif.
  • Attractively layer the pieces by building on one solid piece and drawing from the large and small designs to make the effect look intentional, not haphazard.
  • Use unique, colorful cups to add a punch to your palette. They also work well as servers for a variety of treats, including pudding and soft chocolate desserts.

3. Select Glassware

Don't be afraid to experiment with your drinkware since many glasses have multiple uses.

  • Each place should be set with all of the different glasses that will be used during dinner (except dessert wine glasses).
  • Collect and display champagne glasses in various shapes and colors, choosing ones that enhance your seasonal theme.
  • Remember to place the water glass to the right of the plate, just above the knife. Wine glasses should be set to the right of the water glass.

4. Select Flatware

Flatware can add another stylish element to your holiday table, so don't overlook it.

  • Proper silverware setting follows one simple rule, no matter how formal the event: set the silverware on the table in the order it will be used, from the outside in.
  • Use a cream polish such as Gorham to make sure that everything sparkles.
  • Wooden accents, seasonal plaid and velvet ribbons can be used to dress up flatware and go with the theme of the tablescape.

5. Select Linens

Linens stay with your guest throughout the whole meal so pay attention to the way that they look and feel.

  • Choose placemats and napkins that pick up the colors in your glass and dinnerware and complement your overall theme.
  • If you are folding the napkin, start with clean pressed linen and keep the iron hot.

6. Finishing touches

Plates, glasses and flatware are a given, but it's the accents that really make your table setting memorable and express your personal style.

  • Special items used as favors or place cards (Giant letters, holly leaves or seasonal candies) will distinguish your table and inject some fantasy into your feast.
  • Add glass votives to help illuminate the tabletop. It is an inexpensive way to create warmth and ambiance.
  • Instead of choosing traditional white candles, choose colors that go with your overall scheme.
  • Place items like seasonal fruits or topiaries on the table as a whimsical alternative to a traditional bouquet.
