If you're in search of inspiration for homemade birthday cards, look no further than your recycling bin, to-give-away piles and trash can. If you have blank paper and glue, you can use almost anything from this list to create a birthday card.

  • Turn extra fabric into small rosettes for a three-dimensional card.
  • Old playing cards (use the numbers of the persons age) make unique card embellishments.
  • Empty cereal boxes provide a sturdy - and free - blank canvas for birthday card art.
  • Pages from old magazines make great pictures and collages for cards.
  • Paint swatch cards left over from a decorating project make simple cards with a graphic, modern look.
  • Use a paper punch on colorful food packaging or junk mail before throwing it away. Arrange the pieces in the recipient's name or age for a customized greeting.
