Photo booths are such a fun way to liven up a party, shower, wedding…any kind of celebration! Photo booths are all about the people in the photos, but those photos are much more exciting and personal with a fun custom backdrop to set the stage.
This fish scale backdrop is made from upcycled brown paper bags. You can leave them as brown paper for a more natural look, or customize it with spray paint in any color to suit your theme. I choose to incorporate a few metallic shades along with the natural brown paper in an all-over, random pattern to make it more interesting & dimensional.
Brown paper bags (at least 9)
Step 1: Cut out the bottom of the each bag along one side so that they lay flat. I used 9 bags, but you may need more or less depending on the size of your backdrop. Crinkle them to create lots of texture.
Step 2: Spray paint one side of the bags to match your theme. You could do them all the same color, or mix together a few different shades. I did three in metallic gold, three in metallic silver and I left the final three as natural brown paper.
Step 3: Cut each bag into long thirds.
Step 4: Fold the strips into rectangles. Trace half of a circle on one end of the rectangle to form an elongated fish scale.
Step 5: To save time, cut out the scale shape while the paper strip is folded so you can complete many at once.
Step 6: Map out an area on the wall where your photo booth will be set up. My area was a rectangle about 40-inches high by 60-inches wide. Starting at the bottom of the rectangle, use scotch tape to attach the scales directly to the wall in a row, using a random pattern of colors. Work your way up the wall, one row overlapping the next. You could also attach them to a large piece of cardboard first, and then hang the entire piece all together.
Make sure the area is large enough to completely fill the background of your photos. Have fun in your custom photo booth!
No photo booth is complete without fun props for your guests to get creative with! You can make your own Printable Photo Booth Props and Chalkboard Speech Bubble Props too!
