Paving the way for lovers of fashion, interior design and crafting, our favorite DIY queen Erica Domesek spoke with us to dish about her role as judge on the new show Craft Wars on TLC, her site, P.S. I Made This and what inspired her most.
Celebrations: We love the show Craft Wars. How did you become involved?
Erica: TLC approached me to be a part of the show. Of course I was absolutely thrilled. Crafting has always been on the map, but I love that TLC has made it more prominent for everyone from to moms and teens.
Celebrations: What is the best part about working along side the other judges, Stephen Brown and Jo Pearson?
Erica: I love that we are all so different. None of us knew each other before the show. The most exciting part is that we all have a deep love and passion for crafting and that is what really brings us together. We joke all day long and have fun. Working with them is really a blast. What’s unique is that all have very different businesses, but we all have something we love that brings us all together.
Celebrations: One of our favorite crafts was contestant Andrea's denim wishing tree. Which craft on the show has impressed you the most?
Erica: I can’t say too much, but watch out for a certain technique coming up on the show (airing August 7th) using duct tape. It is absolutely mind blowing!
Celebrations: We've been following your blog P.S. I Made This for quite some time now. When you were just starting out, who was your biggest inspiration?
Erica: I draw inspiration from interior designers, to architects, art installations and even sidewalk chalk. I have eyes that see things in a different way than other people. I think using P.S. I Made This to share that with the world that is the most exciting part.
Celebrations: How did you become so skilled at what you do?
Erica: I have some DIY in my DNA. Ever since I can remember, I was a little girl I was making things. At a young age, arts and crafts was a big part of my life. When I got older infusing art with fashion and prop styling was a big passion. The great thing though is that I’m constantly learning. I’m still learning things even now though on the set of Craft Wars!
Celebrations: Have you ever had a DIY disaster?
Erica: That’s a really hard question. If there is a project that my friends wouldn’t wear or wouldn’t fit with our site, it gets tossed. I like to refer to our site as sexy crafts; it’s very luxe.
Celebrations: What are you tips for a novice crafter looking to improve their skills?
Erica: There are really easy steps you can take. We live in a digital day and age where you can go on YouTube or Pinterest and find really great, in depth how-to’s for almost anything you want to try. On the other end, you can get together with you friends and have a crafting party. Everyone can swap materials to save of cost and you can teach each other what you know. One tip would be to start small work your way up. If you try to go for something really advanced you might end up on the cutting room floor. Start with small attainable projects.
Celebrations: After Craft Wars, what's next for you?
Erica: Starting around September we’ll be working on fall fashion for the P.S. I Made This site. In addition, we have a lot of exciting programs coming up so keep your eyes and ears open!
