It's important to picture your photographer as a party guest (particularly for weddings) because he or she will be right there with you celebrating those moments as they are forever captured in a photo. You want some one who fits your vibe and who you trust.
We've never met a photographer that we didn't like. Some are pickier than others but most are really cool people with this awesome blend of artistry and technical knowledge that is to be admired. But, though our experiences have been positive, it's important to consider your hire on an individual basis.
There's nothing worse than working with a photographer who is either too business-like or too lax about things. You'll want someone who can laugh, interact and encourage smiles from guests, but also someone who is committed to capturing your event how you want it to be shot.
We recommend meeting your photographer(s) at least twice. Once, as an initial interview and again, prior to the event to talk more personably. All of the professionals we know will recommend this arrangement even if you don't. They know first-hand that it's important to get along well with their clients - for both parties' sakes. If they aren't happy working with you, their work will suffer, which will make you unhappy and likely to discredit them. From the opposite end, if you're not happy while posing for them, it will translate to the photo - and that's NOT something you'll want!
It might be a good idea for you to meet the photographer at a restaurant as opposed to his or her studio and see how they interact with others. For most weddings, there is a point where the photographer is corralling people for group shots and you want their manner to be cordial. Consider how they match up with your personality. If you are both "Type A," the partnership could work very well or you could butt heads.
