Keeping Fido and Fluffy Happy at the Barbecue

It's sunny and warm, here in Rochester, NY. Not warm enough for some people, but certainly warm enough for our pets. They love the cooler temperatures, I'm sure.

Cooler temperatures actually help when you're having weekend barbecues. They allow you to fire up that grill and invite the whole family over. Just remember these little tips - to make sure Fido and/or Fluffy can participate without getting in the way or (heavens!) being hurt.

--- Teach them to stay away from the grill. It may help to put a small fence around the grill, to make it physically impossible for them to get near it and get burned, or worse - tip it over!

--- Keep the grass trimmed and free of dandelions. Dandelions bring bees and wasps - at least they do in our yard! Most dogs and cats love to chase insects - but some are allergic, just like people are allergic. So, keep them safe by adding flowers to outer areas of your yard, or...in hanging baskets on the house.

--- Make sure you keep plenty of clean, fresh water available. Even in cool weather, Fido and Fluffy need clean water to drink. Rinse their water bowl daily - and even add an ice cube or two. Many dogs just love ice cubes!

--- Last, don't feed them from the table. Yes, I know you like to share. But, our pets tummies aren't created for the same kinds of food as our tummies. Dogs can eat some vegetables (carrots are good), and hot dogs and hamburgs won't really cause them harm, except...for making them fat! Cats are NOT vegetarians! Don't try to make them be so. Just stick to doggie and kittie treats, and you'll be fine.
