"The bigger, the better" is a phrase that rings true when it comes to the Kentucky Derby traditional wide-brimmed hats. These fabulous chapeau have been worn for decades to the annual event. Typically the most eyecatching and daring hats are worn by those seated in the "Millionaire's Row," the stadium's most expensive real estate, reserved for only the most powerful and well-connected fans.
Originally intended to shield the eyes of spectators from the sun, Kentucky Derby wide-brimmed hats have become a spectacle themselves, and the Kentucky Derby has become a hat fashion show of sorts. This phenomenon is casually referred to as the "Derby Hat Parade," and even men take part in the fun. Keep in mind that in the early days of the event, in 1875 and the years after, it would have been scandalous for a proper lady to appear in public without the proper head covering.
Colorful, feathery, floral, women's hats are decorated with birds, bows, ribbons, gauze, and are usually in eye-popping spring colors, often inspired by a Southern Belle. Men's hats, on the other hand, are usually dapper and dandy, inspired by the fashion of the Jazz Age.
Experts agree that the most important element of a perfect Kentucky Derby hat is its originality. You'll need to be creative to stand out from the crowd, so either make your own hat, have one custom-made for you, or just choose the most outlandish one you find on the shelf!
