Build your own Lego creation by putting together a Lego birthday cake with a store-bought cake and mini cupcakes.

Ingredients

  • 9x13-inch cake from a grocery store bakery (preferably not frosted or with white frosting)
  • 1 can chocolate frosting (for filling between layers)
  • 2 cans white frosting
  • Food coloring to tint the Lego frosting
  • 8 mini cupcakes

Directions

  • Cut 9x13-inch cake in half to make two 9x6 1/2-inch cakes. If your store-bought cake has frosting on it, scrape it off.
  • Place a 9x6 1/2-inch cake on your serving platter. Ice the top of the cake with the chocolate frosting and place the other 9x6 1/2-inch cake on top.
  • Spoon the white frosting into a bowl and tint it to your desired color with the food coloring.
  • Ice the entire cake with a "crumb coat." (A "crumb coat" seals in any loose crumbs so they won't appear on the final layer of frosting.)
  • Scrape the frosting off the mini cupcakes. Turn them upside down and place them on the cake to resemble a Lego.
  • Ice the mini cupcakes on the cake and let the icing air dry for about an hour.
  • Finish icing the cake with as many coats as necessary to get a smooth finish. Refrigerate until its time to serve!
