From the King of Pop to Prince and even Sir Paul, the Super Bowl halftime show has provided a stage for all varities of rock n' royalty. But, we've seen that not everyone scores at halftime.
Here is our list of the most memorable Super Bowl halftime moments ever. Think of it as a highlight reel of the non-football variety. Did your favorite make the list?
1. Super Bowl XXXVIII :Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake
Instant Replay: As a dramatic (and, pre-rehearsed) end to the performance-- on live television-Justin Timberlake ripped away part of Janet Jacksons bustier exposing her right breast. Her exposed nipple was obscured by a gold, star-shaped nipple shield.
Color Commentary: Peek-a-boo planned or not, Janets was the nipple seen round the world. Her infamous wardrobe malfunction eclipsed the memory of the game. It was like the Joe the Plumber of halftime performances.
2. Super Bowl XLI :Prince, Florida A&M Marching Band
Instant Replay: The twelve-minute medley of songs (with improvised guitar solos) was performed in heavy rain that drenched the stage, shaped in the artist's logo.
Color Commentary: Talk about Purple Reign. Weather or not youre a fan of the artist, this impressive performance crowned Prince king of singing in the rain.
3. Super Bowl XXXVI:U2
Instant Replay: As the Edge played the hypnotic guitar of Where the Streets Have No Name, the names of all the victims of 9/11 scrolled up on a screen behind him. At the songs climax, Bono ripped open his jacket to reveal an American flag.
Color Commentary: Bono and the lads reminded us just how powerful rock 'n' roll can be with their post-Sept. 11 performance. There wasnt a dry eye in the Super Dome, proving that even the most macho of men can be brought to tears (before the end of the game).
4. Super Bowl XL:The Rolling Stones
Instant Replay: More than 89.9 million people tuned in to watch the Rolling Stones perform live. But they didnt quite get a true tongue lashing because ABC briefly turned off Mick Jaggers microphone to prevent any language malfunctions.
Color Commentary: Was it just my imagination (running away with me) or did ABC really try to lick Mick? But, the censors couldn't suppress his Jumpin Jack Flash routine. Its Only Rock n Roll, and we liked it!
