Summer is picnic season and the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors with friends and family. With the 4th of July holiday approaching, and tons of patriotic ideas all over the web, I wanted to whip up something extra special for my next picnic with a little bit of a festive twist.
Mason jars have been my go to way to serve cute individual desserts, but they also serve to be extremely functional and portable. In this case, a mason jar dessert is the best way to pack a sweet treat in your picnic basket. There is no need to worry about crushing cookies or squashing cupcakes and all of your friends will love their own little dessert in a jar.
Since I wanted to create something patriotic, I went with red, white and blue foods for an all American touch.
What you'll need:
1 Angel Food Cake (or any white cake that you prefer)
1 container of Driscoll's blueberries
1 container of Driscoll's raspberries
1 container of Cool Whip
Start by cleaning your mason jars and make sure they are fully dry.
Take your angel food cake and cut a thick slice for the first layer of your mason jar. Because this cake has a dark outside, and I wanted this to be a patriotic dessert, I cut the outer edges off so that only the white part of the cake was left.
Place your first layer of cake in the bottom of the mason jar and add a layer of raspberries on top. Repeat this step with your second layer of cake and add blueberries on top.
Top with a big spoonful of Cool Whip and seal your mason jar. (I prefer more cake than Cool Whip, but feel free to add it in between the layers of your cake).
Keep in the fridge until you are ready to pack your picnic basket. Make sure to pack a few spoons!
