Supplies

Gold or yellow food coloring
Small plastic bag
Scissors
8 ounces plain white homemade or store-bought frosting
Your favorite cupcake mix or recipe
Black fondant (You can dye your own, but it’s often easier to just buy it already colored.)

Directions

On parchment or waxed paper, roll out the fondant to about an 1/8 of an inch thick. Cut out a 2” x 3” rectangle for each cupcake you have. Let the rectangular fondant plaques dry overnight.

Bake a batch of your favorite cupcakes, but before you attempt to frost, allow the cakes to cool completely. If you try to ice the cupcakes before they are cooled the icing will melt and slide off!

Once cool to the touch, frost your cupcakes using the plain white icing. Create a smooth and even foundation to lay your fondant on top of by using an uneven spatula to coat your cakes. Reserve 3 to 4 ounces of the icing to pipe your numbers.

Press each fondant rectangle into a cupcake

Tint the reserved white frosting with gold food coloring making sure to mix thoroughly until color is consistent throughout. Spoon into a small sandwich bag and cut the tip off just enough to create a writing tip. Pipe “2011” onto each fondant placard and let dry.
