Anyone can be president for the day with these cute and quirky felt beards and mustaches.
Playful props like these ones add a bit fun and flare to any party, and are as simple to make as they are to sport. Don a twirly President Taft stache, or a real lip-duster like President Roosevelt’s, or go wild with a full-on Lincoln or Rutherford.
Offer guests some famous facial hair of their own to let them in on the fun, and give them something memorable to take home by using the props in a festive photo shoot.
Here's what you need to know to make these fun President's Day party supplies:
Several sheets of felt in various colors
Thin dowels cut to size or bamboo skewers
Rotary cutter and mat
Presidential Mustache template
Marker or tailor’s chalk
Small circular template (I used a quarter)
Using craft scissors cut desired mustaches from our paper template. On a flat surface trace templates onto sheets of felt using chalk or marker.
Using rotary blade and/or fabric scissors cut out mustaches, being sure to cut out small details such as wispy hairs or mouth holes.
If using higher quality felt you may want spray with liquid starch to add a little bit of stiffness to beards and mustaches so they stand upright once attached to dowels. To use starch, spray both sides of felt evenly and thoroughly. Let dry and iron flat.
To affix beards and mustaches to dowels first cut small circles of coordinate felt using circular template. Dab a small amount of craft clue onto one end (the pointed end if using skewers) of dowel and gently press felt circle onto dowel. On mustache or beard locate where you want your dowel—for mustaches I tend to attach to the side and the beards are usually more centered— and add two dots of glue on either side of the circle attached to the dowel. Press circle and dowel onto beard or mustache and pinch circle tightly around dowel so it doesn’t slide out. Let dry completely before wearing.
Note: For hands-free beards and mustaches use elastic cord to create a loop going from one side of the piece to the other. Slip over head like a mask and enjoy mixing, clapping and other two-handed activities.
