These cupcakes taste great, but look even better! Follow our simple tips and bake your own.

Ingredients

Classic White Cake Mix
Food Coloring
White Cupcake Wrappers
Fluffy White Icing
Rainbow Sprinkles

Tips

Visit your local grocery store for food colorings. I was able to find the basic primary colors (red, blue, yellow and green) as well specialty colors (pink, neon green, neon blue and purple). This made it super easy to get the exact shades of colors that I wanted.

For brighter cupcakes add extra drops of food coloring--I even recommend mixing the neons with the basic colors. For more pastel colors, just add fewer drops.

If you're counting on a certain number of these cupcakes its best to make more than you need. One bad thing about this recipe is that a lot of batter gets lost in the process. Instead of the usual 24 cupcakes, bet on making about 15 - 20.

Directions

Follow the directions on your classic white cake box to make your batter. We recommend leaving the egg yolks out as it will allow you to mix your colors more easily later on.

Then, divide the batter amongst six small bowls. If you're using fewer colors, adjust the number of bowls accordingly.

First add red food coloring to one bowl and mix in until you have your desired shade. Do the same for each of the other colors of the rainbow (orange, yellow, green, blue, purple) in their own separate bowls. Follow the directions on the box your food colorings to make the orange and purple using the primary colors.

Once your colors have been mixed, line your cupcake pan with white cupcake wrappers. Then, layer by layer, build your cupcakes in the reverse order of a rainbow. Drop a small amount of purple at the bottom of the pan, followed by blue, then green, then yellow, then orange, and finally red.

Remember: Do not fill your cupcake wrappers more than 3/4 of the way, or your batter will overflow.

Bake for 10 minutes, rotate your pan, then bake for the remaining time.

Once they're ready, take your rainbow cupcakes out of the oven and allow them to cool for several minutes.

When they are completely cooled, remove from the pan, ice and decorate! Keep your topping simple and allow the cake itself to stand out. Enjoy!
