Table runners are a nice way to add a touch of depth and color to your table inexpensively. Whether you're planning a special dinner party or more formal birthday celebration with a seated table, table runners are also another way to bring attention to your party's theme.
Most often used to accent the table cloth, scraps or oddly sized samples of fabric can be found for a fair price at local craft or fabric stores. So long as you know a basic stitch, you can clean up the edges and get a pretty party decoration for less.
Tips to Using Table Runners in Party Decor
If using a table cloth, a patterned runner is nice, otherwise if you’re using a patterned table cloth, use a solid runner to de-noise your table.

Most often, table runners are created to run the length of the table but vertical runners are equally as eye-catching and can really make your place settings stand out.
Use of vertical vs. horizontal runners is all a matter of what you are trying to accent. If you’re trying to accent your florals or your centerpieces, then use a horizontal runner. If you’re trying to accent your place settings, use a vertical. They tend to be a somewhat different touch to the everyday tablescape.

Solid dishes on a patterned runner (as shown here) are so elegant, while more patterned rims will work well on solid fabrics.
