With the holiday season upon us I've been noticing an infusion of all things glittered and metallic. In heavy doses it can be overkill, but a small touch of sparkle can be a perfect way to brighten a Christmas or holiday decorations.
One of my favorite trends right now is mercury glass. It's popping up in major retailers and can also be created as a DiY craft project at home. I like following this tutorial from Martha Stewart to create my own Mercury glass. I love this glass for its subtle shimmer and the way it catches and reflects natural light.
Here are few easy ways to create a natural tablescape using mercury glass as a focal point:
Cluster a grouping of mercury glass votives and/or ornaments in varying colors and sizes. Sprinkle around a handful of faux snow (be careful to keep it out of the votives) along with a few bottle brush trees or animals. Now you have yourself a cozy tabletop winter wonderland!
To create a more complete tablescape for entertaining, try this natural centerpiece enhanced by mercury glass:
Step 1: Gather weathered branches (or purchase them at your local craft store) and paint them white. For a more rustic look as shown here, use a flat white spray paint with only 1-2 coats of spray. If you want to achieve full coverage, you will be better off painting the branches directly using a brush and either white primer or semi-gloss paint.
Step 2: Set your holiday table. This table is an unfinished wood, and the green patterned runner incorporates the non-traditional silver, green and blue color palette. Silver chargers add a touch of sophistication.
Step 3: Add your branches and intersperse with mercury glass candle holders and other items. This table uses natural pine cones, but glass ornaments would be an equally lovely addition.
Step 4: A pop of contrasting color like these red pomegranates add an element of fun and interest to the winter table.
Tip Less is more. Be sure to consider the additional glassware and serving dishes you may need to allow space for.
