The Original Mai Tai Recipe

More Party Ideas

Trader Vic's is widely acknowledged as the original creator of the Mai Tai cocktail, though Don the Beachcomber, Trader Vic's rival, dispites this claim.

The recipes differ so much, that we're willing to go with Trader Vic's assertion since we're bigger fans of their recipe.

The Mai Tai was supposedly served for the first time at the California restaurant in 1944 when the founder of Trader Vic's had friends from Tahiti in town and he mixed up the drink for them.

Serve up this cocktail at your next luau for your own friends!

Ingredients

2 ounces of dark rum
The juice of 1 lime
1/2 ounce of orange curacao
1/4 ounce Trader Vic's Rock Candy Syrup
1/2 ounce of almond syrup (or French garnier orgeat syrup if you can get it!)

Directions

Add the ingredients into a cocktail shaker and shake vigorously. Pour into a glass, and add a sprig of fresh mint for garnish.
