Years ago, my son made a little pinhole lantern at camp using a nail and a coffee can. When lit from the inside, the tiny holes glowed like stars. These toilet paper roll mini lanterns come from the same basic idea, similarly inspired by old tin lanterns decorated with perforations. An LED tea light is the perfect fit – don’t use a candle! You can find LED lights at craft stores.
Supplies
Toilet paper roll
Thumbtack
Small nail
Black craft paint
Sponge brush
LED tea light
Directions
Step 1: Sketch a shape or design lightly on the toilet paper roll with a pencil.
Step 2: Poke holes along the lines of the sketch, about ¼- to 1/2-inch apart, using a thumbtack.
Step 3: Widen the holes slightly by poking a small nail through the tack holes.
Step 4: Paint the roll black using a sponge brush, making sure not to fill the holes with paint. Allow the paint to dry.
Step 5: Slide the tube over an LED tea light.
