Unexpected Guest Preparation: Food

Once your bar and beverage refrigerator is stocked, the next step to ensure you're always prepared for guests is to head to the grocery store. By keeping a supply of long-lasting, guest-appropriate snacks on hand at all times, feeding company is as simple as unwrapping the crackers and placing the cheese on a plate.

Here are some great items to keep on hand; we suggest stocking up once a month or every other month, depending on how long it takes the item to spoil. Crackers, for instance, will stay good for over a year, whereas cheeses should be replaced every month to every other month, depending on the type and expiration date.

Food to Keep on Hand:

  • 2 types of crackers
  • Pita slices or pita chips
  • Hummus and one other dip suitable for crackers or bread
  • 2 types of cheese, one soft and one hard
  • 1 roll of dried salami (not sliced, since it won't keep as long)
  • 1 sealed package of smoked salmon
  • 1 package of pre-made bruschetta
  • 1 type of pre-made, yet delicious, dessert that can be served quickly, like chocolate mousse cake or ice cream pie. We love the Claim Jumper brand chocolate silk mousse pie since it tastes delicious and can be served straight from the freezer, allowing a host to keep it on hand for up to a year.

One Last Food Tip:

If unexpected guests haven't stopped by to enjoy a snack within the month, invite friends over one night for a little wine and cheese night to catch up. This ensures that the food won't go bad and is enjoyed, regardless of whether you receive unexpected company. Or, take your loved one to the park and have a cheese plate and charcuterie picnic. This is a great way to stay prepared but never have to worry about wasting food.
