The right decorations and ambiance are key to creating an eerie, ethereal feel for the Halloween party. Lighting, furniture, colors and accent decorations should all embody the Tim Burton aesthetic.
Lighting
Warm, amber lighting and tons of candlelight. To create the vintage, eerie look for the Halloween party we incorporated candelabras, votive candles in mercury glass votives, and ambient uplighting along the walls and trees to create a border around the perimeter of the party space.
Furniture
Vintage and weathered furnishings added another dimension to the decor. We created seating areas using mix and match velvet chairs and antique wooden tables. The furniture used was gathered from thirft and vintage stores for bargain prices - less than the cost of renting furniture. A great place to find old furniture steals and deals is on your local Craigslist, especially in the free listing section.
Colors
The colors used in the decor were all in a muted, dark fall color scheme. Ochre, muted greens, black, tarnished silver, gray and blackberry melded together to create a dark and brooding palette for the decorations.
Decoration
From unusual pumpkins to creepy vintage bat drawings, the decorations are eclectic and varied.
Pumpkins
We used a mixture of unique pumpkin varieties for the Halloween party, but there are over 100 varieties of unique pumpkins. Visit local pumpkin patches that have a great variety of species such as ironbark, Australian blue, orange miniken, Japanese pumpkin, aroma pumpkins, Lady Godiva pumpkins, and Mozolevskaya.
Vintage Frames and Drawings
The vintage animal drawings were found online, turned into grayscale in a photo editing program and printed out onto cream colored watercolor paper. The watercolor paper gives the picture a more authentic look, as if it was drawn or painted directly onto the paper. For the Halloween party we used naturalist drawings of moths, butterflies, monkeys and bats.
After printing, the naturalist pictures were placed in an eclectic mix of frames that were spray painted black.
Vintage Halloween Postcard Garland
As with the naturalist drawings, all of the vintage postcard images used in the postcard garland were found and printed out from various online sources. A simple Google image search for 'vintage Halloween cards' will yield numerous results. All of the images were downloaded and converted to black and white before being printed on a thick cream cardstock.
After printing, the postcards were strung up along a length of twine with miniature blue clothing pins.
Vintage Stamped Cocktail Napkins
All of the cocktail napkins used for the party were decorated with a vintage motif stamp and smear-proof, waterproof archival ink. It's an easy way to customize something that usually goes undecorated, creating a fun surprise for guests when they get a cocktail.
